Dr David Hamilton wrote an article raising this very question.

He states that Oxford University scientists conducted a study involving 37 people with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). When they imagined moving their arms, pain went up and swelling increased by 8%, even though they didn’t actually move. It was all in their mind.

This is a perfect example of how visualizing alone can cause your body to have a significant physiological response as a result.
