You wouldn’t think so at first because…would you believe it… I grew up in gyms! My mum was a fitness instructor for 23 years so I went to every group exercise class I could from the age of seven.
Then I hit puberty…..
My hips grew wide, my chest grew large…way too large… and my body filled out. I was short and others thought I was chubby. As a result, the last place I wanted to be seen was the gym!
Those were dark days for me. You know the days you just want to hide away from the world. You know that feeling, right?
From my teens right into my early 20’s I suffered from serious depression about the way I looked. I honestly thought I was the most unattractive person in the world. I hated my body.
Every morning I would stand in front of the mirror and cry my heart out. My mother and sister thought I was vain and spent hours doing my hair. The truth was, I was crying, disgusted by the way I looked.
That was then…..
NOW, I love who I am, I love my body, I love my face and I am so highly motivated to eat well and exercise that I literally bounce out of bed each day!
That may sound a little over the top but it’s true! I can’t wait to get to the gym or put on a workout DVD at home or go for a run outside.
So how did I do it?
How did I go from total and utter despair to loving who I am and getting healthier and more energized than I could ever imagine?
I simply changed my mind.
I made the decision to change.
Here’s what caused me to make that decision:

It was a day like any other. I was pegging out the washed clothes when the phone rang at an eerily early time of the morning.
I heard mom answer the phone. I was straining to hear what she was saying when suddenly the back door opened, she stepped through it and literally collapsed on the ground.
My heart sank!
After a few minutes I was able to pick her up off the ground. She was screaming and whaling something about my dad. He had been in a serious accident and was being flown to the nearest trauma hospital by helicopter.
Immediately my survival technique kicked in and I got strong. Really strong. I kept mum calm while we packed clothes for dad, organized the family and started our journey to the hospital.
It was the strangest journey….my sister and brother spent the whole time laughing. It was as though we knew on some level it would be the last time we laughed for quite some time.
Once we arrived at the hospital, the trauma kicked in.
We were immediately ushered to the trauma center where my dad was being treated.
He was laying on a table, wrapped in a silver blanket. He was motionless…
The doctors were talking to my mom. Telling her to prepare as dad was unlikely to live. The doctor told us to say our goodbye’s.
I looked up at the doctor and asked, is dad in pain?
The doctor said no but as I looked back down at my dad, a single tear rolled down his cheek.
I had been so strong up until that point. It was then that I lost my strength and screamed at the doctor to give him some pain killers. Make the pain go away!
It suddenly hit me that the strongest person I had ever known would never be the same. We didn’t even know if he was going to live.
My dad did live.
He beat the odds and surprised the doctors and nurses.
My dad is a quadriplegic. He broke the 3rd and 5th vertebrae in his neck and shattered his 4th, severely severing his spinal cord.
Here is my dad now:
My dad is my greatest teacher.
He taught me I was wrong to hate my body so much!
He taught me I was so incredibly lucky to be able to get out of bed, to scratch my nose, to feed myself and even take myself to the toilet!
Suddenly, I became grateful. I began to appreciate every aspect of my body. My legs, my arms, my digestive system.
Every time I fed myself, I would say “thank you”.
Every time I exercised, I would say, “thank you”.
Every time I felt an ache or a pain, I would say, “thank you”.
Many years later I re-discoverd my passion for health and fitness so I became a personal trainer! Yet it wasn’t enough…I needed to go deeper…

How does this happen?
Because of what you see (imagination or real), your brain will respond by sending messages to every cell of your body. Your brain is telling your body how to respond to what you are seeing.

If you repeat this process over and over, your cells begin to recognize the message from the brain and your cells begin to behave like you do actually exercise.

“As you can see from the emails below it has been a year since I started listening to your tapes. I couldn’t let the time go by without sending you another message. Wow, what a year!!! I am still not eating sugar. That is the first of many miracles. I have travelled a few times in that year and where I usually go a bit crazy and overeat and come back with a few extra kilos to work off I am now coming home a little lighter than before. Twelve years ago I let go of alcohol and this was similar but the sugar had pushed emotions deeper and held them there for longer.
