It was a day like any other. I was pegging out the washed clothes when the phone rang at an eerily early time of the morning.

I heard mom answer the phone. I was straining to hear what she was saying when suddenly the back door opened, she stepped through it and literally collapsed on the ground.

My heart sank!

After a few minutes I picked her up off the ground. She was screaming and whaling something about my dad. He had been in a serious accident and was being flown to the nearest trauma hospital by helicopter.

Immediately my survival instinct kicked in and I got strong. Really strong. I kept mum calm while we packed clothes for dad, organized the family and started our journey to the hospital.

It was the strangest journey….my sister and brother spent the whole time laughing. It was as though we knew it would be the last time we laughed for a while.

Once we arrived at the hospital, the REAL impact of it all kicked in.

We were immediately ushered to the trauma center where my dad was being treated.

He was laying on a table, wrapped in a silver blanket. He was motionless…

The doctors were talking to my mom. Telling her to prepare as dad was unlikely to live. The doctor told us to say our goodbye’s.

I looked up at the doctor and asked, is dad in pain?

The doctor said no but as I looked back down at my dad, a single tear rolled down his cheek.

I had been so strong up until that point. It was then that I lost my strength and screamed at the doctor to give dad some pain killers. Make the pain go away!

It suddenly hit me that the strongest person I had ever known would never be the same. We didn’t even know if he was going to live…

The good news is…my dad did live.

He beat the odds and surprised the doctors and nurses that first treated him.

The result…..

My dad is a quadriplegic. He broke the 3rd and 5th vertebrae in his neck and shattered his 4th, severely severing his spinal cord.
